Invisalign is one of the leading options for achieving straight teeth – but what do you do after completing treatment? Unfortunately, some patients fail to maintain their results because they don’t properly care for their teeth after completing Invisalign. Keep reading to find out how to keep your teeth straight after Invisalign treatments!
Use a Retainer
The most common method for maintaining straight teeth after Invisalign is a retainer. This is a device that fits onto the teeth, much like the Invisalign aligners. The retainer helps keep the teeth in their new position while their movements finalize. Retainers are removable, so you will be able to take them out to eat, drink and brush your teeth just like you would with Invisalign. Additionally, unlike Invisalign, retainers only need to be worn part-time.
How Often Do I Need to Wear a Retainer After Invisalign?
Immediately after your Invisalign treatment, it’s recommended to wear a retainer nearly as often as you wore your aligner trays. However, as the teeth adjust to their new position over time, you can start wearing your retainer less. After a few weeks or months, you can begin wearing your retainer exclusively at night. Several months after that, you will be able to wear your retainer only a few nights a week while you continue to maintain your results.
Are the Results from Invisalign Permanent?
The results from Invisalign will be long-lasting, but it’s up to the patient to maintain them for as long as possible. Patients who fail to properly use a retainer after treatment may notice that their teeth begin to shift back towards their initial position. Additionally, it’s natural for the teeth to shift slightly over time as the body ages. However, patients who use their retainer as recommended and maintain good oral hygiene will enjoy Invisalign results that last for many years to come.
What Happens If My Teeth Move After Invisalign?
If your teeth move after your Invisalign treatment is complete, additional Invisalign treatment may be required to correct it. The good news is that patients who have to undergo additional Invisalign treatment can typically expect a treatment length shorter than their initial treatment.
