Moving on from braces to a retainer is an exciting phase in orthodontic treatment! While retainers do provide patients with more freedom than traditional braces, it’s important to remember that there are still some restrictions and limitations when it comes to living life with a retainer. Here’s what you need to know about living with a retainer!
What should you not do while wearing a retainer?
While wearing a retainer, you should be sure not to eat, brush or floss while wearing it. Just like traditional braces, your retainer can be damaged by certain foods. Furthermore, it can get in the way of dental hygiene and prevent you from getting a full clean. Luckily, retainers can be removed for all of these activities, allowing you to eat any foods you like and continue your dental hygiene habits without any difficulties.
Additionally, you should not attempt to clean your retainer with hot water or aggressive cleaning products. These can damage and warp your retainer, limiting its effectiveness or even ruining it completely. The best way to clean your retainer is to rinse it with cold water and use only orthodontist-approved cleaners.
What are the rules with retainers?
The rules with retainers are less strict than with braces, but they are important nonetheless. As mentioned above, you must remove it when eating, brushing and flossing. You should also keep the following rules in mind:
- Store your retainer properly in its case when removed
- Wear the retainer as directed, usually all day and night when you start
- Clean your retainer regularly to keep it free from debris and plaque
Is it okay to eat with retainers?
No, it is not okay to eat with retainers. Even soft foods can get caught in the retainer and cause damage to the appliance. It is always recommended to remove your retainer when eating. Then, you can brush your teeth or simply rinse the mouth before putting your retainer back in so that debris does not build up around the retainer and your teeth. You can drink with your retainer in, but be careful to avoid hot beverages or colored beverages that can stain or damage the retainer.
Can I bite down on my retainer?
No, it is recommended to avoid biting down on your retainer. Some patients use this as a method of pushing the retainer into place in their mouth, but it could damage the retainer if it’s not fully in place when you bite down. Instead, use your hands to gently place the retainer into the appropriate spot once it’s properly aligned.
