Getting braces is often a long and involved process, one that spans from that very first consultation to the visit where you finally get them off. Even after removal, though, there is a protocol you have to follow to continue taking care of your teeth. Let’s go over the time frame of getting them on, how long you need to wear them and taking care of your teeth after they come off.
First off, it’s important to realize that everyone’s teeth and bite are different, which will determine the varying lengths of treatment. That said, most orthodontic work will take between 12 and 36 months to complete. There are many factors that contribute to how long you’ll have them on, such as:
- Your age
- How responsible you are about following treatment instructions
- How much work you need done
- Type of braces you get
- Your oral hygiene practices
Step 1. Examination and Consultation
It all starts with the initial examination appointment. At this visit, photos will be taken of your teeth and molds will be made. X-rays may also be taken at this time. You’ll have to fill out medical forms and get a full oral exam by the orthodontist. Your orthodontist will then be able to better tell what kinds of problems you have and how best to fix them. You will receive a rough estimate of the timeline but this can always change depending on personal rate of progress.
Step 2. First Treatment Appointment
This is when your braces are actually applied to your teeth. If you are an clear aligner (Invisalign) patient, special impressions will made of your teeth for manufacturing of the clear trays. Expect this visit to take at least an hour.
Step 3. Adjustments
Throughout the duration of your treatment, you will be expected to visit the office every six to eight weeks or so. This is so the orthodontist can assess progress and make any necessary adjustments.
Step 4. End of Treatment
Once the orthodontist has determined your braces can come off, you will be scheduled for another hour-long appointment to have them removed. You will also be fitted with a retainer at this time. The orthodontist will ask that you come in after that on a regular basis, usually every couple of months, for a retainer check.
Throughout all stages, you will be reminded of proper oral hygiene, which includes brushing and flossing at least 3 times every day, and properly storing and cleaning your retainer. Getting braces may seem like a time-consuming chore but the time will fly by and soon you’ll have a beautiful healthy smile to be proud of!
